So FLIPPING EXCITED today! My home state of Alaska Senator Lisa Murkowski co-sponsored the #PUMPAct (Providing Urgent Maternal Protections for Nursing Mothers (PUMP) Act. Ultimately, this will help nearly 9 million working mothers have reasonable break times and a private place to pump breast milk for their babies. After reaching out to Senator Lisa Murkowski’s office in support of the #PUMPAct a few weeks ago, I received a positive reply from her staff. The icing on this breast milk cake is that it passed the HELP committee.
Seriously, it isn’t a far walk into our past to see that this IS a huge deal. I recall my mother sharing stories of getting fired on the spot for telling her employer she was pregnant. So, working and breastfeeding were out of the question circa 1971. But, of course, back then, breastfeeding was for hippies and poor people. Well, that was the cultural message at that time. When you know better, you do better.
